About the Work
Fragments of Tomorrow was created for the South Forward project at DHB Art Space during Art Rotterdam 2026 - a collaboration between artists, DHB Bank, Unity in Diversity Rotterdam, and residents of Rotterdam South.
The work reflects on how sustainable futures are built, not through grand gestures, but through the accumulation of small, intentional choices. The materials embedded in the surface are not decorative. Coffee filters, collected and transformed, become part of the painting itself. Waste made meaningful. Fragments held together.
Children appear as symbolic figures pulling materials forward epresenting the next generation as active participants in shaping what comes next. Not inheritors of a problem, but carriers of possibility.
The piece was shaped by conversations with residents of the Noordereiland and the work of Stichting Iedereen aan Boord, a community initiative building resilient, circular futures in Rotterdam South. Their stories are woven into this work as much as the materials are.
Circularity, here, is not a concept. It is something that was lived, learned, and painted.

The coffee filters in this work were transformed in three different ways before being incorporated into the painting. Each state of the process reflects a different stage of the cycle: discarded, altered, renewed. Waste transformed into something that lasts.

Fragments of Tomorrow is a one-of-a-kind original. It will not be reproduced as an original.
It is hand-signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
This work is executed on premium linen with professional deep aluminium stretcher support and reinforced cross-bracing. The surface is prepared with multiple acrylic gesso layers and an isolation coat.
Coffee filter elements have been coated with archival acrylic gel medium to enhance their structural integrity and longevity before being incorporated into the surface. All mixed media attachments are adhered with acrylic gel mediums selected for flexibility and long-term stability.
The finished work is sealed with a protective archival varnish. Every material decision was made with the same intention as the work itself
