artist statement
I paint to translate stories
Stories that are often overlooked, unheard, or held quietly beneath the surface.
My work is driven by a desire to offer context, understanding, and solace. Through colour, composition, and narrative, I explore themes of identity, belonging, resilience, and emotional truth. While many of my works are anchored in the lived experiences of women, my practice is not confined to a single subject or form. The stories I tell take many shapes, guided by the emotions, memories, and questions that surface during the process.
Even when a story carries grief or tension, I choose warmth, vibrancy, and boldness as a way of honouring resilience and my heritage. Every element within a piece, colour palette, gesture, material, and scale, is intentional and plays a role in shaping the narrative. When images alone are not enough, I turn to poetry, allowing words to complete the story and deepen its meaning.
I see art as a vessel: for change, for reflection, and for connection. My work exists to take up space, quietly or boldly, while holding space for others in return.
Practice & Process
My practice moves fluidly between acrylic painting and digitally painted works. Regardless of medium, my process remains painterly and intuitive, built through layers, revision, and emotional listening. Digital works are created as original paintings and produced as museum-grade archival prints on fine art paper, preserving texture, depth, and material presence.
I am an intentional painter. Composition, colour, and form are never incidental. They are chosen to support the emotional and conceptual weight of each piece. Whether figurative or abstract, my work is grounded in purpose: why this piece exists, and what it holds.
Social Impact & Parallel Work
Alongside my studio practice, I engage in social impact–driven projects that align with the themes and values present in my work. These initiatives allow me to contribute to broader conversations around care, resilience, equity, and environmental responsibility.
I am the founder of the Ackee Seed Foundation, which supports regenerative and community-focused initiatives in Jamaica, including recovery efforts following natural disasters. I see this work not as separate from my art, but as an extension of it, another way of translating stories that matter and nurturing connection between people, place, and purpose.
At my core, I am guided by feminist and environmental values. I care deeply about people, planet, and the balance required to build a more future-proof world. These beliefs quietly shape both my creative practice and the ways I choose to show up beyond the studio.
