Different Kind of Fruit is about the negotiation of taste. Not just food, but pace, etiquette, and the unspoken norms that come with building a life somewhere new. A potato carries the plainness of Dutch culture; a parrot carries the tropics it won’t quite let go of. Between them sits the real subject: learning to feel at home in a taste that’s unfamilar.

Migration asks you to adjust in ways people expect: the language, the weather, the paperwork. But nobody warns you about the small daily negotiation of taste, not just what’s on the plate, but the taste of a whole new rhythm of living. The unspoken rules. The pace. The things people call normal here that you’re still learning to call normal too.

This painting was shaped by a small research survey I ran ahead for Rotterdam Carnival, gathering views and lived insight from members of the Caribbean community here in the Netherlands. I wanted the painting to speak to something people from that community would genuinely recognise. not just represent them, but reflect an experience they’d helped shape.
The potato carries the weight of this new place, plain, practical, everywhere, the way Dutch culture itself can feel to someone arriving from the tropics. The parrot carries what came before , colour, warmth, a life once measured in different fruit. Neither one is wrong. They’re just different registers of the same hunger.
For some, that adjustment happens loudly, a whole cuisine relearned, a whole self renegotiated in public. For others, it’s less obvious. Its a private taste that changes without anyone noticing, a small daily act of becoming someone slightly new.
But it’s nourishment either way. A different kind of fruit is still fruit. A different kind of home is still home.
This original artwork is produced as a one-of-a-kind archival pigment print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Bright White, a museum-quality fine art paper chosen for its soft texture, depth, and ability to hold colour with nuance and longevity. The material allows the subtleties of tone and emotion within the work to remain present over time.
