About the Work
From that surface, wildflowers grow. Of different varieties, size, colour and origins, they climb together. Overcoming the everything that has tried to hold them back - the systems, the structures, the expectations. As a community they move forward with their heads up, toward a world where equality is not an aspiration but a way of life.
In Against the Wall I, that movement has just begun. Flowers gather at the base and begin their climb, reaching over one another as they attempt to cross the barrier together. It is the first effort, the moment resilience becomes collective action.
Together, the Against the Wall I & II demonstrates what might happen when resilience is no longer an individual act of survival, but something we cultivate collectively.

I spent three months making these paintings, and they were some of the most difficult works I have created, not only because of their scale, but because of how personally connected I am to what they represent.
I wanted the flowers to speak to the many people I have encountered who have had to navigate life from a position of disadvantage. People who have been told, directly or indirectly, that they are too different, too foreign, too dark, too small, too tall, too loud, too quiet, or simply not what was expected.
But I didn't want to make a work only about the wall. I wanted to imagine what happens when people grow together.
The coffee filters embedded within the paintings extend this idea of community. They connect back to my earlier work and to conversations around Noordereiland in Rotterdam, where community became a reminder that collective action can create movement even when larger systems feel difficult to change.
