Tek mi home
to the warmth of yesterday
Memory is never still
In the warmth of light, in the rhythm of rain, in the way certain colours feel like home. There are places we carry long after we’ve left them. Somewhere between what was and what remains, memory softens its edges.
about the series
Tek Mi Home is an ongoing painting series born from my need to look back, not to return, but to understand what shaped me.
The work explores memory, nostalgia, and the quiet longing for belonging that lives in the past. It reflects on growing up in Jamaica, on the textures, colours, and emotional imprints that linger long after time has moved on. These paintings are shaped by fragments: moments remembered not exactly as they were, but as they are felt, softened, warmed, and sometimes romanticised by distance.

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
I’ve always been a nature person. Long before I knew any other landscape, Jamaica’s was the one that impressed itself on me the most. Whenever I traveled across the island, I would find myself searching for palm trees and banana plants.
There’s a plant we see everywhere in Jamaica that looks like a banana tree, but isn’t. As a child, it took me a while to learn the difference. And for a long time, every time I spotted one, my heart would lift in excitement… only to realize it wasn’t actually a banana tree.
Eventually, that stopped mattering.
Even when it wasn’t a banana plant, the feeling it gave me was the same and that feeling was enough. On those drives, I would deliberately look out the window searching for that lush green, returning each time to the quiet realization: you’re not a banana, but you’re good enough.
Banana Sky exists in that space. It holds the memory of those drives, the green blanket of home, and the understanding that something doesn’t have to be exactly what you expect to still give you exactly what you need.
