Artists make sustainability on Zuid already fully tangible and visible

Rotterdam - While the plans for a new sustainability museum in Rotterdam-Zuid are taking shape, the South Forward project proves how the change from 'op Zuid' is already taking place from 'bottom up'. By linking artists directly to neighborhood initiatives, the Unity in Diversity Foundation and DHB Bank make this local sustainability tangible and visible.

The neighborhood as a source of inspiration

As part of this approach, three emerging artists – Melissa Moria, Karla King and Urvee Kulkarni – have entered the neighborhood. They worked closely with the driving forces behind three specific projects: Stadstuin Rotterdamse Munt: focus on local greening. Everyone on Board (Noordereiland): focus on social cohesion and sustainability. Primary school 't Prisma (Hoogvliet): the educational project 'Van Zooi naar Mooi'.

Karla King

Karla King is a Jamaican-born contemporary visual artist based in the Netherlands. Her multidisciplinary practice blends digital and acrylic painting with poetic narrative to explore identity, resilience, and the layered stories of women. Rooted in empathy and informed by personal and collective histories, her work reflects themes of displacement, belonging, and cultural memory. King’s art invites viewers into deeply personal yet universal stories—acts of remembrance, resistance, and healing.
