Between the margins
Navigating belonging and identity in the Netherlands through the lens of a Jamaican migrant

ABOUT THE SERIES
The series takes the Amsterdam parakeet as its central symbol, a tropical bird, vivid and improbable, that arrived in the Netherlands as an escaped or released pet and made the cold northern city entirely its own. It did not adapt by becoming less itself. It simply showed up, persisted, and became part of the landscape. The parakeet is now a fixture of Dutch urban life, bright green against grey skies, loud in the canals, impossible to miss and impossible to remove.
This is the shared story of those who arrive somewhere new and find themselves learning to belong in an environment that wasn’t built with them in mind. Navigating a new culture, new norms, a different way of being seen. People have always moved. But migration is rarely understood for what it actually is once someone has arrived: not just the visible logistics of relocating, but everything unspoken that comes after.e full arc: arrival, winter, survival, and bloom.
